Customer Question

5 Y.O. German Shorthair Pointer runs away when off leash. Sometimes (if in the mood) she will come, sit and stay. But don't count on it.

Optional Information:
Pet's Gender: Female
Pet's Age: 5
Type of Animal: German Shorthair Pointer
Name of Animal: Ginger

Already Tried:
Treats to reward when she comes work best....but not always. Shock collar does nothing....just makes her flinch....we have it on a low setting...."2" on a scale of 1 to 5. Once off leash, she is gone. We lost our home in the country and had to move to the city so I worry she will get loose and be hit by a car.

Hi there,

I used a training method called the Really Reliable Recall and that worked well for my two dogs (not always in the face of a squirrel but 90% of the time they come running right away). It would take awhile to type it out, so I've found a website that details the training method.

I hope this helps. I always used jars of baby food, it works great! I would not advocate the use of a shock collar every. It will make her scared and much less likely to return to you.

Thank you for the idea. I have ordered the book. Will let you know results.

Your welcome. I can say it works very well if you are diligent with your training. It worked very well for my dog.

Hi,

I'm just following up on our conversation about Ginger. How is everything going?

Started training indoors yesterday. Using bacon for her treat and she loves it.

I would not recommend using bacon. It is very high sodium and high fat, and can lead to serious stomach upset or pancreatitis. Try jars of baby food, they are easy to use for this training method.

Never would have considered baby food......is there a specific type? (meat?)

I use the meat varieties, but vegetables are okay as well. It's easy to use, just let them lick out of the jar.

I'll get some at the store tomorrow.

OK....It has only been a few days since we started the training....which is supposed to take a 2-3 weeks. So I can't really comment on the efficacy of your solution yet. Make sense?

I understand, but I believe the efficacy will be up to your training. I have provided you with an answer and should receive credit for the discussions we've had.
