Rat Terrier: adopted a 5 year..loving

Customer Question

I have adopted a 5 year old Rat Terrier. She has been with us almost a year. She is very loving and a well minded dog while in the house. She will sit, lay down and stay on request as long as we are indoors. The problem: When we walk she gets very excited and pulls on her leash if she sees another dog or person. I have tried to calm her, but I cannot find a way to get her to calm down. I can control her more easily when we are alone however I have another small dog that I need to walk as well. He is very well behaved and heels perfectly until she starts barking and then I have two dogs going crazy. What can I do to help calm her?

Dr. Loretta :

Good Morning and welcome to Just answer. I am Dr. Loretta, a licensed veterinarian and I am happy to answer your question.

Dr. Loretta :

This is a common behavior because they get excited. Purchase a DAP Collar (Dog Appeasement Pheromone) at the pet store. This is a canine pheromone that acts as a calming agent and will decrease anxiety. then carry a coke can with pennies in it and when Piper starts this behavior, shake the can loudly and say a string NO! This diverts her attention to you and if you are consistent with this training technique, she will calm down knowing this is not appropriate behavior.....does that make sense?

Customer :
