Dr. Loretta :

Good Morning and welcome to Just answer. I am Dr. Loretta, a licensed veterinarian and I am happy to answer your question.

Customer :

what can i do about the anal sacs always needing to be expressed like every 2 weeks

Dr. Loretta :

It appears that Bailey's glands are producing a very thick fluid that cannot come out the very tiny ducts of the gland causing impaction. Since this is continuing, then the next step is to remove these glands. There is no way to make this fluid more liquid and Bailey does not need these glands. Removing them will stop this process and make Bailey more comfortable...does that make sense to you? This procedure is done every day in veterinary practices because this is a common occurance in the smaller breeds.

Customer :

about how much does it cost to have it done ?

Dr. Loretta :

It depends on the clinic but usually $250-500 and should be done by an experience surgeon. You can call your vet for an estimate. It will be worth it especially since Bailey is so young.

Customer :

i already knew about the surgery but i was looking for something more immeadiate help because i really do not have the funds for the surgery

Dr. Loretta :

Your only alternative is to either learn how to express these glands themselves or find a groomer that knows how to do this. When the glands become impacted, they have to be expressed or they will become infected. There are many Youtube videos that will teach you this and here is one:www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBABQP3SAO0

Dr. Loretta :

Does that make sense?
