dog: eat all day yesterday..defecate..yelped..cried

Customer Question

My dog has recently been eating the new "raw food" nuggets. She did not eat all day yesterday but I coaxed her into eating today. She just tried to defecate but yelped and cried and it was hanging out of her. I put on gloves and pulled it but it was just hanging, already outside of her. I think she is constipated and don't know what to do. If it was a blockage I don't think it would have come out at all.

We don't want to spend the high fees they charge at the emergency vets. What can we do to help her? Like I said it's already out now but I am concerned for the next time or the rest of what's in there/ HELP

`Hi There,

I am Dr. Denise and I am glad to assist you.

To help her defecate more easily because it is possible the raw food is constipating you can sprinkle Psyllium seed powder on the food. I just usually give a good sprinkle maybe a 1/4 to 12 of a teasppon full and add a couple of tablespoons of water. It is tasteless so she should eat it. It is very safe and will help her stool be easier to pass. You can play with the amount of psyllium til you are satisfied with her stool texture. You can get it at a health food store. If nothing open today you could use Metamucil or Miralax from a drug store for her. Both safe and gentle.

She is coming up to me moaning what do we do NOW?

Thanks. I have I.B.S. myself and cannot tolerate psyllium myself so I take acacia which is supposed to be good for either constipation or diahrrea (sp). I mix it in with water. Could I give her that?

She is coming up to me moaning right now. What can I do NOW?

Is she trying to assume different positions to get comfortable? Sometimes in older females it is common to see pancreatitis which causes abdominal pain and they will try to relieve that with a praying position or attempts to get comfortable. Also there is usually vomiting. So the fact that she ate today is good. If she is not assuming positions to try to get comfortable and is not vomiting I think you can watch her. If any of the above happen or she is really stressed then you will need to take her to ER.

Yes, you can give her Acacia.

Hi Suzy,

I'm just following up on our conversation about Brandee. How is everything going?

Denise,
No, she is not assuming different positions. It was only constipation, I think due to the new food. Thanks to your expert advise she is ok now and the Miralax helped greatly and so has the psyllium seed. Her stool is much softer now. Thanks so ver much for your advise.
