my dog has been chewing scratching, skin blisters for years. it's worse when she eats wet dog food. she is frequently treated for fleas. it's worse in the summer the more she's outside. Benedryl doesn't work. most prominent chew scratching places are her face and her rear. Eats Purina dog food (dry) our other dog is not affected.

HiIt is really important to follow up with your veterinarian. Seasonal itching especially on the face is often pollen allergies (called Atopy) but the hind end scratching flags also likely flea allergic dermatitis. It is important to break the allergy cycle, often with short term cortisones after a good work up including canine blood profile including thyroid profile, monthly flea control recommended by your veterinarian and then possibly Atopica and even allergy testing if things don't settle down. Hope this gives you some things to discuss with your veterinarian.Dr. Jay Mawhinney
she does it all year long. she seems almost to be allergic to herself
If it is all year round ask your veterinarian for a food allergy elimination diet to test for 2-3 months. Changing commercial dog foods doesn't work. There are too many common ingredients. She may have pyoderma (staph skin infection) by now secondary to the allergies and will need 3-4 weeks minimum of antibiotics along with medicated shampoos as well. Consider Omega 3 fatty acids as they always help a little.

Hope you followed up with your veterinarian because things may just get worse if untreated.
