What to do?? Crysal Rose (westhighland terrier) had a blood test May 16,2012 and had elevated ALT 473..AST 72 and Alt phosphatase 143. She had the liver bile test pre meal was32.5 post meal 33.0 which both are out of range.. In January, 2012 her Alt was 59, What happen in four months... In Dec 2010 her Alt was 172. the Vet put her on denamarin and the Hills L.D Diet.. Her alt came back down into range in 4 months. But now this situation has presented itself.. The vet put her back on denamarin on 5-17-12, She has not been on it since June 2011.. She gave her an antibotic shot and said to have the Alt checked in a month and go from there... The only thing I did different from Jan 2012 was add a few cooked vegetables to her food... I would like your feedback on this.. The dog feels great...

HiThe vegetables would not cause the problem. She may have acquired porto venal shunts (veins in liver and in portal/intestines, spleen pancreas, liver circulation) or she has an ongoing liver disease caused by any number of things. i would suggest, ultra sound guided biopsies by an internist or other specialist to look for cause and certainly the denamarin does appear to help at least in the inflammation and function problems a little anyway and try to keep it up. Good luck on this.Dr. Jay Mawhinney
