My Pit/mix was found stray @ 3mos. w/ a severe case of (demodectic?) mange. No fur, scabs, etc. Our vet said she likely got it from her mother & is in the 30% that will never get better. She takes 4ml of Ivermectin solution everyday w/ her food as well as Omega 3 fish oil. She also goes for a Mitaban dip every other week or so. I've spent over $1400 to try and get her better. She is not improving.I've found organic home remedies containing Neem & wondering if they are even worth the money. At this point I am wiling to try anything. It is breaking my heart to see her itching herself raw to the point of bleeding. I feel the Vet is prescribing medication to help the situation, but not TREAT the problem. Thoughts & suggestions are most welcome. I feel if there is nothing we can do I will have to put her down for her own sanity & peace. Please help!
Optional Information: Type of Animal: Pitbull Gender: Female Age: 8mos. Name of Dog: Igloo Already Tried: Ivermectin solution (4ml daily w/ food), Omega 3 fish oil (w/ food daily), Mitaban dips every week to every other week. Raw, meat based pet food (not kibble or very little daily). Sulfer dips. Nothing is helping for the long term.
Welcome to JustAnswer! I would be happy to assist you. I am a 2003 graduate from UC Davis and a Medical Director of a 4 veterinarian practice.I am sorry to hear about this concern. First, and most important, if I were you, scheduling an immediate examination with a dermatology specialist is a must!!!!Find a Dermatologist--> Then select "find dermatologist"Get a copy of all records, test results, and bring to specialist. Certainly, ivermectin is one of the treatments of choice for demodex, but I am worried that there is maybe an alternative way to approach this treatment, a different dose, etc...Trust me...a dermatologist may be able to get this figured out for you. To help with some itching, giving an antihistamine might help with comfort. Benadryl can be given at a dose of 1mg per pound of body weight. Keep in mind, Benadryl tablets and liquids come in different sizes. So, an approximately 25 pound dog can get a full 25mg tablet or a half of a 50mg tablet. I usually avoid the liquid Benadryl in larger dogs (you would have to give too much of it). You can give Benadryl every 8-12 hours. One other point is that if she is raw or bleeding, there is likely secondary bacterial and/or yeast infection. AND....secondary infection makes pets more itchy!!!So, it may be that you also need additional antibiotic and/or antiyeast medication. could be wrong, but it is an important point. Basically the vet has said her immune system is too weak to fight the Demodex. So how do we boost her immune system to help fight this?
I don't necessarily agree with that statement. I agree that the immune system is likely compromised and is making recovery even more difficult, but I would NEVER rely on that being the only explanation why things are not resolving. I really feel the dermatology referral is critical. Standard Process Holistic Immune SupportYou will also see a small search icon on the webpage to search all of the other support supplements.
