my 18 mth malamout bitch has been waking in morningf with yellow discharge from one eye which i have cleaned with warm water cotton buds and cottonballs the second time with antiseptic highly diluted . however the discharge from the eye was greater on second day .was this a mistake; should i have not used antiseptic but saline solution. i believe i could try diphenhydramine is there any other common drops or solutions i could try that are not harmful to the dog.

Thank you for your question. What was the antiseptic that you used?
dettol
Ok, I am in the US, so I am not too familiar with this product. The Dettol antiseptic products that I can find online contain ingredients that should not be used in the eye. I would strongly recommend that you have your dog seen so that your vet can stain the eye to see if there are any ulcers in the eye. It is likely that the discharge you saw was from a mild eye infection, but if the antiseptic has damaged the cornea, then we may have a much more serious problem. We can usually treat this is prompt care is started early enough. Scarring and permanent vision loss can result in some cases. To clean the eye between now and the time you get her seen, simply use a cloth moistened with plain water.I hope this helps, please let me know if I can answer any other questions.
