my dog has just recently for the past week has had ear problems with just one ear, i wash the ear out once a week and after i dry it out, i put some antifungal power inside his ear. he keeps getting this brown residue inside his ear and ive been using the ear mite treatment stuff daily and the conditions seems to remain the same. after i use the earmite treatment and dry the ear out the best i can and wipe all the brown residue that i can out of his ear, he tilts his head and walks bath a forth and continuously shakes his head and after a few minutes he calms down. but even after he has calmed down his ear doesnt perk up normally as it should (because he is a german shepherd). i just want to know if i should take him to the vet or try something different?

Hi,Welcome to Just Answer. I'm very sorry to hear about Zeus's ear problem. At this time, the shaking of his head, the tilting, and the fact that this brown residue persists has me very suspicious that there is a bacterial infection in his ear at this time. This wouldn't respond to mite treatment or anti fungal treatment. What I'd recommend is a check with your vet. They can take a swab of the material from the ear and look at it under a microscope to see what is specifically there. Depending on what type of organisms they see, they can then start up a specific topical and possible oral medication for it. Some of the very serious bacterial infections in the ears are complimented with oral medication to treat the infection from a systemic route in combination to the topical.
