My beagle is allergic to chicken and has really puffy paws because he chews on them and is on Doxycycline and Cephalexin for the infection that has been caused because of the chewing. However, I just saw that the food I got with him from the humane society that I adopted him from has chicken in it. So his paws can't get better while he's still eating what he is allergic to. I also don't want to upset his tummy by just flat out changing his food. What should I do?
Hi there and welcome to Just answer!! I am Dr. Altman, a licensed veterinarian and I am happy to answer your questions.
Do a quick transition to a non chicken based diet over a 5 day period...25% new food for 2 days, 50% 2 days, 75% 2 days then over to the new food completely
Higher quality organic diets with no by-products are advised to minimize chicken by-products not listed
is there anything I can do tonight to help with his itching and biting?
Do you have benadryl? If so, how much does he weigh?
yeah, he's about 30 lbs
Give me one moment, my computer is about to die...
1 adult 25 mg benadryl every 6- 8 hours for itch will help quite a bit
and that won't conflict with the meds he's already on?
Sorry, had to run grab something to connect my computer
No it will not conflict whatsoever
okay, great. Thanks
You are welcome
