Ruby, our 8 year old German short hair pointer, has never shown any behavior problems. In the recent few weeks, she has chewed clothing and a rug and has been eating dirt from potted plants outside. She receives lots of loving attention, has a good appetite and plays very well with other dogs at the park, almost on a daily basis.

Good Morning and welcome to Just answer. I am Dr. Loretta, a licensed veterinarian and I am happy to answer your question.
My concern for Ruby is that this sudden change in behavior may be due to a medical condition. This could be a metabolic issue such as thyroid problems, or other metabolic issues. It is important that you have your vet examine her and run lab work to determine if there is a medical cause for this which can be treated. If this has been ruled out, then this may be due to a behavior change due to anxiety. Purchase a DAP Collar at the pet store which is a canine pheromone that acts as a calming agent and will help Ruby past this.Your vet has medication to help such as Clomicalm if this is not enough...Good Luck!
