my dogs (2 8 year old Great Dane mixes) just got in a tussle with a large, healthy looking male raccoon. One received a small nick on his ear, otherwise they are clean of marks. The raccoon is dead, the one dog tossed it in the air like his stuffed toys and broke its neck--there was no blood that we could see on the raccoon. It was a very shrt lived scuffle. They are at the end of their 3 year vaccination window --do I need to be very worried?

Hello,
This is Dr. Christian. Welcome to JustAnswer. Raccoons can be carriers of rabies and even though your dogs are current on their shots there is some cause for concern. More than likely your vet will want to booster the rabies vaccine immediately and I would recommend calling your vet in the morning. More than likely there is a rabies control officer in your county that can take the raccoon for rabies testing. Since rabies is an important human health hazard it is always best to be safe. Don't handle the raccoon body yourself. If you have more questions please reply back.
