Resolved Question:

The tip of my dog's penis (sheath) is slightly inflamed. Can I treat it with neosporyn until I can get him to his vet tomorrow? He's a neutered, nearly 3 year old dog that has just finished a 10-day round of Temaril-P tabs for an allergy situation.

Drew :

Hello, welcome to JustAnswer! I am a licensed veterinarian, and I'll be happy to help you in any way I can.

Drew :

Neosporin is safe to apply, but it will be important to have Bo wear a cone type collar to prevent licking, otherwise the Neosporin will have little benefit.

Drew :

The neosporin could be applied every 4 to 6 hours as needed.

Customer:

Could the problem have been caused by the Temaril-P?

Drew :

probably not, it's a commonly used medicine in dogs, but problems with the sheath are not a typical side effect.

Drew :

especially with only a short 10 day course being given, side effects are not all that likely.

Customer:

Okay. Thank you for your help this morning. I'll treat it and take him to his vet in the morning.

Drew :

you're very welcome -- I wish you both all the best :)

Drew :

most local pet shops sell the cone collars if you want to purchase one.
