My dog keeps coughing as if he is trying to clear his throat. He went to the groomer 1 month ago. Started coughing 3 days after that but the cough only lasted 2 days then stopped. The cough started up again a few days ago. No fever, no mucus. He is still eating fine and having regular BMs. Other info: He is a 9 year old Lhasa-poo with no other health issues and has not been vaccinated for kennel cough

Hello there,

Coughing in a dog this age can be caused by a long list of things. Kennel Cough is very unlikely given the time frame. It also does not resolve within a few days on it's own. Most other infectious respiratory problems have an incubation period of 1-2 weeks max. Heart disease, heartworm infection, allergic bronchitis, tumors, collapsing trachea and laryngeal problems are just a few possible causes. Blood tests and radiographs are needed to rule those things out. The more the dog coughs the higher the chance of permanent injury to the windpipe. Robitussin DM can be used at 1/2 teaspoon every 6 hours as needed to rule out a mild cause. If the cough persists testing will be needed to determine cause and the correct treatment plan.
