My Dogs hind legs are twitching/spasming. This has been on

Resolved Question:

My Dog's hind legs are twitching/spasming. This has been on going for rougly 15 minutes, and came out of nowhere. He doesn't seem to be in pain, and seems to be happy enough. However, he has also been sniffing around a lot during this period, something he doesn't normally do, and doesn't seem to be able to settle down for long.

Any ideas what this could be? I am worried about poisoning or poisonous insect/spider bites.

Dr. Jenn :

Hi there

Customer:

Hi

Customer:

Any ideas what might be causing the spasms?

Dr. Jenn :

If it is only in the hind end-it could be related to discomfort from arthritis, pulled muscle, or even a nerve related issue. A toxin would usually causing twitching in more places- An insect bite is alo not likely. Your babywill need to be examined by your vet so we can determine the source of discomfort. The vet will be able to give an anti inflammatory to get him some relief. If this were seizure activity, he would seem more out of it during the episode and walking around like normal.

Dr. Jenn :

I would video the spasm-so you can show your vet-just in case it stops before you get there.

Dr. Jenn :

sorry- and NOT walking around like normal!

Customer:

Ok.Yeah the only discomfort is that he has a hard time sleeping due to the spasms. There are no vets open at this time (1AM here) is there anything we can do at home to help relieve the spasms?

Dr. Jenn :

Is he on any medication? What does he weigh?

Customer:

I just learnt that he may have ingested some hay fever medication earlier in the day Roughly 9 hours ago, are there any known effects to Dogs if they swallow Human anti-hystamine products?

Customer:

No medication, he weighs 16-18 KG

Dr. Jenn :

What is the medication called?

Customer:

No one knows the name of the tablets he may have gotten into, they were likely a homebrand 100mg anti-histamine.

Dr. Jenn :

Chances are this is not from the antihistamine- it would be more likely to make him sleepy. You can give 1/2 tablet of a buffered 325mg aspirin by mouth. The dose can be repeated in 12 hours if needed. Hopefully it will help.

Customer:

Is buffered aspirin just regular human aspirin or is it a special pet product?

Dr. Jenn :

It is human-just use the buffered type so it is gentle on his tummy. Or if you have baby aspirin (81mg) you can give 2 of those.

Customer:

He seems ok now, he is sleeping on a blanket, still some spasms though. Thanks heaps for the help. We will keep an eye on him over night. :)

Dr. Jenn :

good luck! Take care
