Customer Question

my 10 year old toy poodle has started throwing up (it's a yellow color) along with diarhea thats red tinged. She's been doing this at night in our bedroom, which is highly unusual for her, she's very well potty trained. Should I be rushing her to the vet? she seems fine otherwise.

Hello,

Vomiting and diarrhea can be caused by something as simple as eating something that has disagreed with her system or something more serious such as an infection or foreign body obstruction. You can try OTC Peptobismol to help calm her GI tract. Just give her a dose relative to weight as recommended for an adult human. For example, a 12 lb dog would get 1/8th the dose recommended for an adult human. You can also feed a bland diet of chicken and rice or cottage cheese and rice. You give Pedialyte to help with hydration. If she shows no improvement in 24 hours a trip to your vet is advised.

Hope that helps,

DVM Dave
