When do you breed a female dog, right after they stop bleeding

Resolved Question:

When do you breed a female dog, right after they stop bleeding or before? Please advise as we are trying to mate our 5 year old terrier. She has been bleeding for about 5 days now.

Hi, thanks for your question about Angel. Typically, the most fertile period is shortly before the bleeding ends, but determining the exact day, requires either blood tests to measure hormone levels, or swabs from the vaginal lining that are examined under the microscope. Otherwise, it's somewhat of a gamble as to whether or not it's the right time. Generally, if you have both dogs together, the female will be receptive when she's fertile. IN situations where artificial insemination is being used, or the bitch and stud are owned by different people, it's more critical to time the breeding just right.

About how many days does the female usually bleed before they become fertial?
Expert:  Dr. Drew replied 5 years ago.
Typically bleeding lasts for 2 to 3 weeks, and it's in the last few days that they become fertile. Since she's only been bleeding for 5 days, I would not suspect that she is yet fertile.
