My Chihuahua has congestive heart failure. She is on Lasix

Resolved Question:

My Chihuahua has congestive heart failure. She is on Lasix and Enacard. Her coughing and hacking are coming back anyway. I am on disability and cannot afford lots of vet bills or even the cost of euthanasia. She is basically doing ok now, though from what I've read, she doesn't have a long life expectancy. She had loud heart murmurs on both sides felt without the stethoscope, x-ray showed enlarged heart with fluid in her lungs. The meds have helped, but as I said she is starting to cough again. Can I put her to sleep myself with Klonopin and does this make me a monster. I have doctor bills for myself I haven't paid yet.

Hi there,

Have you talked to your veterinarian about payment options or other treatments?

No. I am on Social Security Disability. I'm afraid of what kind of payments and how long it would take to pay them. I have co-pays for my health problems I haven't paid yet. I originally lived in a cold mid-western climate and she is an apartment dog, so I litter trained her. The Lasix makes her go so much, keeping up with that is getting very difficult for my back as the litter seems to return to it's original clay state and is very heavy, and I go through a lot more litter. Taking her out to go would be impossible as she goes so often and I can't physically take her out that much. I know this all sounds like concern for myself, but from what I've read online her life expectancy is pretty low. It wasn't discovered until she had a very bad cough. I had no idea a cough could mean heart problems. I thought she was being irritated by the down from a comforter I was letting her use. Well, excuses aside, I love her, but financially and physically it is becoming very hard for me. The vet could feel the murmurs and said they were very loud, x-ray showed enlarged heart, fluid on lungs. Yes, I'm repeating myself. I've also read about the cost of euthanasia. Even if I waited, I still couldn't afford that.

Heart medications such as lasix and enalapril are actually quite cheap.

With what you list above, one option is to contact your local ASPCA or Humane Society as they can often offer lower cost options or financial assistance.

Another option would be to contact your local veterinary school to see if they can offer financial assistance.

The final recommendation would be to find a veterinarian that can perform this and offer a payment plan for you. This website can help with that:

I know the meds are cheap. It's the follow-up visits, blood tests, and possibly another x-ray, the cost of the litter. So, basically by not replying to that particular part of my question, you would consider it inhumane to put her down too soon, even if it is effecting my health?
Expert:  CriticalCareVet replied 3 years ago.
I would rather not have the tests and just provide treatment if cost is a concern.

Exactly why I didn't ask my vet the original question.

I know this can be a very difficult time for you in deciding what to do.

I will hope for the best.
