Dog Health Questions? Ask a Dog Vet for Answers ASAP
Hi there and welcome to Just answer!! I am Dr. Altman, a licensed veterinarian and I am happy to answer your questions.
What type of shampoo do you have at home?
I have some dog shampoo...
I am not sure it is a medicated shampoo though...
It is called Just Add Water...then I have Suave for myself that I use...
Could you grab your pet shampoo + tell me the main ingredients?
water, sodium laureth sulfate, cocamide DEA, cocamidopropyl betaine, disodium oleamido MEA sulfosuccinate, colloidal oatmeal, isostearamidopropyl...
I would like it more if the oatmeal was higher on the list. What about ivory soap?
morphaline lactate, fragrance, aloe vera gel,
OK, good thank
I don't have ivory soap...I'm trying to think what else I have that is mild...
I have baby wipes
Do you have any way to prevent her from licking? Her saliva will make any infection worse
Other than just stopping her, no...not really. I don't have a cone or anything for her head...
I think the shampoo should be ok, not ideal but we can work with it
I also have an Aveeno oatmeal bath tablet
not sure if that would help
Apply the shampoo to the area once daily with ten minute contact time before rinsing. This will decrease the bacteria
No, let's do the shampoo
What about an old sock that you can cut the other end off and use as a body glove to prevent her from getting to the area? You can put little foot holes in it so it will cover her vulva. Again not ideal but it will keep her away from the area!
Definitely encourage drinking is a good idea. You can make her drink more by mixing her dry food with some water to make it more like a soup
ok...I can try something like that...
would wet food be better than dry/
Yes, at the moment. Or a mixture of the two
ok...what about putting any topical ointments on the area...like desitin or something?
No, traps in moisture which we want to avoid
You can use some benadryl to decrease itching
ok...like half a tablet or something?
Do you have tablets then? How much does she weigh?
How many mg are the tablets?
or do you mean like a topical benadryl...
she is probably 12 pounds
not sure...let me check and see if I have any first...
Ok...here's what I have in the medicine cabinet for allergies/itching...I have loratadine 10mg pills, I have a caladryl clear anti-itch lotion...but no benadryl
None in the pet cabinet either?
my parents might have some benadryl though...and I can walk to their house and check tomorrow...what dosage would she need if they do have some?
You can use loratidine 10 mg 1/4 tablet orally daily, benadryl would be 12.5 mg every 6-8 hours as needed for itch...
I live in Dallas, and our roads are all iced over...so normally, I would take her in, but I'm not even sure if the vet will be in the office...so I just want to do what I can here at home till I can take her in. Is there anything else?
Those are the biggest things: keep her urinating frequently, minimize the itching and licking, keeping the area clean
ok...thank you so much for the advice...there is nothing worse than seeing your dog suffer and feeling helpless ;-(
