How do dogs get scabies _

Customer Question

How do dogs get scabies?_

Dogs get scabies generally from another dog which is infested with the Sarcops scabei mite. It is quite infectious and the mites will even live on people. About 1/2 of the owners and handlers handling an infected dog will get infected. In people it is usually short lived but very itchy. Generally a rash develops on the arms, legs and waist band areas.
The mite will live for a day or two off of a host but not for too long. Cleaning with alcohol or a quaternary ammonia compound will usually get rid of them on tables and floors.
Hope this helps.
