Hi there,

Itchiness can be from many different things

1) Fleas\

2) Mites (which you cannot see without your vet doing a skin scraping)

3) Allergies

4) Bacterial

5) Fungal

6) Immune mediated

7) Hormonal or metabolic

The tough part is figuring out what is the culprit, because then the correct treatment can be done. For now, place an Elizabethan Collar on your dog to prevent him from causing self trauma and itching at himself. Next, go ahead and bathe him with a soothing shampoo, such as an oatmeal shampoo. Once dried, you can apply a topical cortisone spray, such as DermCool or a Caladryl lotion to help soothe the itching. You can also give benadryl orally (This dose is 1mg/lb or 25 mg for every 25 lbs) every 8 hours. If this helps, then GREAT! However, it is possible you may need more than this, and a visit to your vet will probably mean running a few tests, such as a skin scraping, a DTM culture and/or even bloodwork in some cases, and then prescription medication.

I hope this helps!!
