How can you help a dog that has been traumatized, get over it?
Optional Information: Type of Animal: shitzooGender: maleAge: not sure/they say 6yrs old Already Tried: Really nothing, only kind treatment, tried to house break him but he won't go outside unless I go with him. He seems to demand that I be with him constantly even from one room to another, he starts howling and I go get him. I have tried treats, he enjoys the treat but it doesn't produce any results. I got him from the Helping Hands Humane Society, so therefore I have no idea what he has been through. They say he is six years old, I have no idea whether he is six years old or not. His hair was matted badly, he has had a physical and passed, I have had his teeth cleaned. He had two absessed teeth which were treated and all right now. He is deathly afraid of the portable kennel so I don't use it. He howls fiercely whenever I try to leave and go some place. He always has an accident before I get home and I won't be gone that long.
HiThis really depends on what you mean. An abused dog needs a lot of patience and gentle care along with socialization slowly but surely with other dogs and people. One traumatized by an accident like a dog attack or hit by car will sometimes need to have reassuring care as well along with carefully resocialization with other dogs(if a dog attack).Dr. Jay Mawhinney
