It depends on the case and the patient. Certain patients are more tolerant of certain drugs and a dog with recurrent problems will typically need different drugs than a first time problem. My first drug of choice is Clavamox (clavulanic acid and amoxicillin). It is a nice broad spectrum drug that tends to work quite well. Sometimes I will use a cephalosporin like cephalexin or Simplicef if the patient isn't tolerant to the Clavamox. Some dogs will vomit on Clavamox, especially if it isn't given with food.

You can, but it is definitely not as effective as an amoxicillin or cephalexin.
