Can I give my dog xanax or ativan to calm him for a shave?
Does he have any health problems?
Customer: replied 7 years ago.
No he doesn't.
OK, and how much does he weigh?
Customer: replied 7 years ago.
56 lbs
OK, thanks. And what size Xanax do you have on hand?
Customer: replied 7 years ago.
I have 0.5 mg xanax and I have 1 mg ativans(lorazepam).
OK, you can safely use the Xanax, I'd recommend 1 to 2 tablets, start with one and see how it affects him, you could give 2 if there's no effect from 1. I wouldn't recommend using Ativan.

Remember, since I cannot examine and evaluate your dog, any decision to use a medication is based on your own judgement, and my information is not to be construed as medical advice since I have no ability to do so without examining your pet.

With that being said, Xanax is a safe drug in most circumstances, it's just important to be aware that dogs with aggressive tendencies can become dangerous with any sedative in their system.
