1999 dodge ram 1500 with 5.9l gas (360). having trouble

Customer Question

1999 dodge ram 1500 with 5.9l gas (360). having trouble getting it started. it sounds like its firing. it started once for me, but ran like crap and soon as I touched the throttle it died. I tried putting new spark plugs in along with wires and cap and rotor. I have about 50psi fuel pressure. I also have spark from the coil and at the spark plugs. I have signal from the crank sensor while cranking. its not throwing any codes, and I noticed while cranking, the "spark advance" stays at 0 degrees and doesn't change.

If you disable the fuel system, does the engine start and run using starting fluid?

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
it does not start on ether
Expert:  Amedee replied 4 months ago.

Ok, have you checked engine compression?

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
no
Expert:  Amedee replied 4 months ago.

Ok, this is going to be your next step. If the engine is in time and has nice bright blue strong spark, it should run on starting fluid (if you disable the fuel system).. hands down. If not, the engine is flooded or out of time. It is as simple as that.

So your next step would be to verify the engine is breathing correctly and is in time. I would start by checking engine compression first and then check the timing marks if needed.

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
all ranging from 100psi to 140
Expert:  Amedee replied 4 months ago.

Sounds like the engine is out of time. They all should be very close to eachother

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
I put number one at top dead center, and pulled the distributor cap off and the rotor points right to number one on the cap
Expert:  Amedee replied 4 months ago.

Ok, then the engine should run on starting fluid.

Are you sure it has spark on all cylinders?

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
good spark
Expert:  Amedee replied 4 months ago.

Would you be willing to speak on the phone?

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
anything else I can try
Expert:  Amedee replied 4 months ago.

Speaking on the phone would be our best bet.

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
should the spark advance be changing on my scanner while cranking?
Expert:  Amedee replied 4 months ago.

No sir it should not

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
ok, I would prefer messaging over talking on the phone.
Expert:  Amedee replied 4 months ago.

Ok, no problem.

I will leave this question open for other experts.

Good luck!

Good morning and welcome to JustAnswer!!

My name is ***** ***** I have worked for a Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep dealership for 19 years and I will do my best to help.

If you have good spark and fuel psi then it could be a clogged converter.. You can monitor this by watching the MAP vacuum to see if rises when you get it started or you can drop the exhaust at the manifolds and see if it will start then.. We see quite a few older vehicles with the converter rattling for years and then it breaks loose and clogs the exhaust.. Let me know what you find.

took the exhaust off and fired up. converter is clogged

Is there a reason you have not rated yet?

Expert:  -Brad- replied 4 months ago.

Understand I don't get credit for helping you until you leave me a positive rating, and I helped you find the converter is clogged so I would appreciate a positive rating..

Thanks,
