Hello and welcome to just answer. What did the mechanic do to supposedly repair it?

Chris

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Nothing it started for him. I had it towed there.
Expert:  Chris replied 1 month ago.

Ok, did he mention if there were any diagnostic trouble codes?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
No codes to help him out

Does this truck have the factory security system? Do you have a Gray or Black key?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Black key.
Expert:  Chris replied 1 month ago.

Ok

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Just door locks from the key fab

Ok, There are 3 common causes for this. 1 a failing crank shaft position sensor, 2 a failing cam shaft position sensor, and 3 a failing PCM (engine computer). Either one can act up when the engine warms up. Do this: Have the mechanic recheck the cam and crank sensors with his scan tool when it acts up. Ask him to check the OBD II monitors in the PCM. If they reset, then that is a good sign the PCM is the problem

Any thing I can do? I need to have it running foe tomorrow. I have a basic obd tool
Expert:  Chris replied 1 month ago.

Well check for codes with your scan tool. Let me know if there are any

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Ok. Give me a bit
Expert:  Chris replied 1 month ago.

Ok

Expert:  Chris replied 1 month ago.

I need to step out for about 20 minutes. Check back in a bit.

No pending codes.

Ok, tell me when you turn on the key to the "run" position, can you hear the fuel pump in the tank come on for about 2 to 3 seconds and then turn off?

Ok, now when you crank the engine, does the tachometer pointer/needle move up a little?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
A lititle it tries to catch but wont stay running
Expert:  Chris replied 1 month ago.

Hmmm, how much fuel is the gauge showing?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Full
Expert:  Chris replied 1 month ago.

Did this problem happen after you filled the truck up?

Expert:  Chris replied 1 month ago.

I ask that because maybe you got some bad fuel (water, diesel. etc.)

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
We use the station often
Expert:  Chris replied 1 month ago.

Well, just thinking of all possibilities. I have seen the best stations accidentally get water in their fuel.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
It seems to start ofter it sits for awhile
Expert:  Chris replied 1 month ago.

That would indicate a possible PCM or cam/crank sensor.

Expert:  Chris replied 1 month ago.

Can you keep it running by holding your foot on the throttle?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
No. Actually makes it not try to start
Customer: replied 1 month ago.
But the mechanic said when he tried it he had to keep giving it gas for a br to keep it running
Expert:  Chris replied 1 month ago.

Hmmm, this is a good one. Will your scan tool display sensor data?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Not sure it is the OBD Wiz
Expert:  Chris replied 1 month ago.

Let me see if I can look it up. Be right back

Expert:  Chris replied 1 month ago.

OBD Wiz is a software based scan tool using your PC. Is that what you are using?

Expert:  Chris replied 1 month ago.

Hello?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
I looked at the one wiz and couldn't find a sensor tab
Expert:  Chris replied 1 month ago.

Ok, well at this point, a full feature scan tool is needed so that all sensors and other data can be checked to see why it won't start. May be a cam or crank sensor like I mentioned, or may be a MAP sensor, or the PCM. See if your mechanic can come out to where the truck is and connect his tool to the truck. That is my recommendation based on what we know.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Ok. Do you have recommendation on a full scan tool forr a DIY guy like me?
Expert:  Chris replied 1 month ago.

Yes. A good mid level scan tool for a DIY like you is the Innova 3040c. It reads live data, OBD codes and OBD monitors. It is around $80.00 and I think you can get it on Amazon. Another one is the CRAFTSMAN OBD2 PRO SCAN TOOL. It costs more ($250.00) but will also do ABS and airbag systems. Sears sells that and maybe Orchard Supply Hardware.
