2001 dodge ram alt. Two wheel drive v8 transmission won't shift right. Go gear one two. Then reves to super high rpm to get up to 50. Rmps red lines but gears stay in lower gears won't get to three and. Fourth gear.
JA: How old is the transmission? Have you checked the brake switch?
Customer: Same as the truck. Brake switch.??
JA: Are you fixing your Ram yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: Lets see have taken too four garages one says new transmission. One tried rebuilt hussle. One was spun out tweeker. Took to dodge dealership. Willing to pay one diagnostics bill. Had it four 5 days and fumbled around head transmission guy sated could not give reading on codes because it only reads the last fifty startes. Iv taken pan off new granny filter and flud. Nothing.
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: Engine has been running hot.took off thermistate was. Cloged with rust from radiator. Somehow put Stan on electrical system and the two grounds on back of engine to fire wall smoked to pieces.No electrical on truck at all. Batter has full juices. Nothing eles. Put the positive and negative cables back on to battery and the negative post startes arcking little beeds metal. Wire is full hot.

If the trans was in limp in and stuck in a single gear then the problem could be electrical but if it freewheels or slips instead of going into third gear that indicates internal transmission failure.

It's possible but unlikely that the issue is in the valve body. Some hydraulic pressure testing can be done and if it is determined pressures are ok then the valve body can be removed and some air pressure testing done to get a better idea of whether clutch circuits are leaking. You almost surely either have a clutch or geartrain failure.
