Hello and welcome to JustAnswer!

It's possible that you could have a driveability issue or powertrain movement may be causing a broken or rubbed wire to open up or short to ground but if it dies immediately when put into gear the most likely cause would be the torque converter clutch staying locked up.

Does it feel as if the engine drags down and dies just as if you let out on the clutch with a manual trans but continued to hold the brake?

my car is an automatic. When shifted into gear (drive or reverse) the engine just dies. No jerking or sputtering. It just dies.
