Customer Question

power liftgate latch will not completely unlock. seems the secondary latch is stuck, not allowing it to open
JA: Is this your first time dealing with this issue?
Customer: yes
JA: What is the model/year of your Dodge?
Customer: 2013 durango
JA: Are you hoping to fix this yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: pulled the fuse hoping to reset the latch, no help. Opened the access panel to see if there is a manual release and cannot find one.
JA: Anything else you think the mechanic should know?
Customer: the latch cycles, hatch tries to open (lightly pushing did not help), but secondary latch does not disengage, so the gate re-latches.

Hello and welcome to JustAnswer!

You almost surely have a bad latch if it only releases partially.

Were there problems leading up to it not opening at all?
Has there been any recent body damage or repairs in the liftgate area?

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
no and no. it tries to open, and moves about 1/2 inch, but seems like the secondary latch is still engaged, so it cycles again and closes.

Odds are the problem is either a mechanical failure of the latch or a bad pawl switch in the latch. Do you have access to a full capability scan tool?

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
no. we were trying to get it fixed ourselves

I would recommend replacing the latch if you're wanting to try repairing it yourself.

agree, but that does not fix my current problem of not being able to open it. The liftgate will not open, so that i can look at the latch to see what is happening.

The trim panel needs to be removed to access the latch.

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
very difficult to do when the gate is closed.

It does make it inconvenient but there isn't another way to access the latch short of cutting a hole in the sheet metal from outside.
