It starts rough with smoke blowing out of the tailpipe but

Customer Question

It starts rough with white smoke blowing out of the tailpipe but it stops smoking after about 30 to 45 seconds. If I don't drive it for a few days it really smokes at startup.
JA: How many miles are on the car? Have you been losing oil or coolant?
Customer: Losing very little oil and just changed the water pump.
JA: What is the model/year of your Dodge?
Customer: It is an 08 dodge grand caravan with 208,000 miles.
JA: What year is your Grand Caravan?
Customer: 2008
JA: Are you hoping to fix this yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: It runs hot if I drive it and stop at a traffic light but won't as long as I'm driving it. I checked the fan and it's operating when I turn on the air. I did change the water pump because the bearings had gone bad.
JA: Anything else you think the mechanic should know?
Customer: I can't think of anything else at this time.

It sounds like you may have beginning stages of a head gasket leak. When engine heats up the cooling system gets pressurized then when you shut vehicle down the pressurized coolant can slowly enter combustion chamber which causes the smoke when you first start. To verify this is the problem you will want to have a cooling system pressure test done, if it loses pressure then you know there is a leak. Since it sounds like leak is small you may be able to buy some more time with some headgasket stop leak. Let me know if you have more questions, thanks.
