Miller 8420 and a slide hammer is the correct way to remove the stub shaft but they often won't release. They are held in with a retaining clip which is essentially the same as a CV shaft retaining clip.

In some cases I've seen a five pound slide hammer welded directly to the shaft.

The easiest way I've found to remove them is a flat chisel bit in an air hammer. If you remove the CV shaft clip you can get a flat chisel into the groove and they'll usually come out right away with a good air hammer.
