I have a 2005 cummins 5.9 and it started to have a tick

Customer Question

I have a 2005 cummins 5.9 and it started to have a tick sound out the exhaust and some smoke. Assumed it was the turbo so I drove it back home and the smoke got worse. Along with the throttle sticking. Now it cranks but will not start.

Hello
Customer: replied 5 months ago.
Let me know what info you need
Expert:  David Gieswein replied 5 months ago.

Hi there, well I need you to check some areas for me

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
Ok
Expert:  David Gieswein replied 5 months ago.

With the engine off, I need you to take the intake to the turbo off and grab the impeller shaft in the center. Try to move it up and down side to side. Also check to see if there is oil all over. There should be very if not no play in the impeller. There should be no oil either.

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
There is no oil but I can move it a little
Expert:  David Gieswein replied 5 months ago.

Also check the outlet and tube going out to the intercooler. There should be no oil in there either

Throttle sticking could be a leaking injector. Leaking injector could cause smoke. What color smoke?

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
When I was driving if I got up to speed slowly the noise was not as noticable. If I punched it you could hear it right away and sounds like it's coming from the turbo. Also when I was on the throttle it would be like the throttle was stuck open a bit and when that happened it was smoking pretty bad. I shut it off and now cranks but won't start
Expert:  David Gieswein replied 5 months ago.

Also, a no start would not be caused by a bad turbo. A little play is normal. Not normal would be noticeable fin contact or grinding of the housing and fins together.

Expert:  David Gieswein replied 5 months ago.

What color smoke?

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
That's what I assumed the turbo would just be garabage if it was that bad. And prior to any of this I never had any issues with it at all. I did put a edge juice programmer on it but seemed to work fine still. And the smoke when it first started was more black and now before I shut it off it was more white and stunk like a lot of raw fuel
Expert:  David Gieswein replied 5 months ago.

Sounds like you have a bad injector. The turbo is making the noise because it is getting liquid fuel in it. Have you checked your fuel filter lately?

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
Actually no I haven't in a while. And one injector would make it not start
Expert:  David Gieswein replied 5 months ago.

Yes, cause if you have a stuck open injector the pressure never gets high enough for the other injectors

Expert:  David Gieswein replied 5 months ago.

You need to check and see if your fuel filter has "hour glassed".

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
What would that look like I'm under the hood now
Expert:  David Gieswein replied 5 months ago.

Like this

Expert:  David Gieswein replied 5 months ago.

Driver side firewall right next to a really big connector

Expert:  David Gieswein replied 5 months ago.

Use I believe a 24mm or equal socket with a 1/2" rachet. Take your time, I will wait

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
I have the filter in my hand
Expert:  David Gieswein replied 5 months ago.

What does it look like? Bad?

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
I have the filter out
Expert:  David Gieswein replied 5 months ago.

What does it look like? Black? Hour glassed?

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
It's black
Expert:  David Gieswein replied 5 months ago.

Ok, now look into the bottom of the fuel bowl for any water.

Expert:  David Gieswein replied 5 months ago.

Water is the number one killer of injectors on Cummins

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
It's empty but some dirt in there
Expert:  David Gieswein replied 5 months ago.

Ok. A little dirt is normal. Water is not. Sometimes it is very hard to see the water

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
It's pretty well empty looks like some fine dirt or shavings in the bottom
Expert:  David Gieswein replied 5 months ago.

Yeah that's pretty bad. You should try replacing the filter and adding diesel fuel injector cleaner. Pour some of the cleaner into the bowl and the rest in the tank

Expert:  David Gieswein replied 5 months ago.

Try to remove the dirt and shavings with shop towels. If you have to, you can bump the engine to turn the pump on and get more fuel in the bowl to assist cleaning

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
I looked again and could maybe be some moisture but doesn't really look like water dropplets . and I usually run cleaner in almost every tank. Is the yellow valve supposed to be forward on the filter houseing or against the housing
Expert:  David Gieswein replied 5 months ago.

I usually use a vacuum sucker. Swish it around, then add more fuel and suck it out till it is clean. But I realize you may not have that equipment

Expert:  David Gieswein replied 5 months ago.

I think against the housing is closed

Expert:  David Gieswein replied 5 months ago.

You will find out when it leaks or doesn't leak all over the chassis! Just wash it off.

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
Ok I'm just using a old shop vac to clean housing
Expert:  David Gieswein replied 5 months ago.

that will work good too

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
Ok I cleaned it all up
Expert:  David Gieswein replied 5 months ago.

Do you have a new filter?

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
No I thought I did I can get one tomorrow nothing open here
Expert:  David Gieswein replied 5 months ago.

That's fine, let me know if you can get it running.

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
If an injector went would it throw a code
Customer: replied 5 months ago.
I tried sending a video to you I have it running but it's rough and still smoking like smells like raw fuel it's whiteish blue colour.
Expert:  David Gieswein replied 5 months ago.

Did you put a new filter in it?

Expert:  David Gieswein replied 5 months ago.

Injector will only set a code for open or shorted circuit

Expert:  David Gieswein replied 5 months ago.

You might see a fuel rail pressure code though

Expert:  David Gieswein replied 5 months ago.
