I have an 1987 dodge dakota 4x4 when i engage the 4x4 the rear tires will grab after a half rotation causing the tires to grab and when on asphalt they will chirp any ideas

It's grabbing because of positive traction which is normal and it's not recommended to be in 4wd on pavement... How does it do on dirt?

It's not recommended using 4WD on pavement, and especially not when turning as you will be asking for a broken axle. If this is your only issue then it sounds like it's operating normally...
