Hello and welcome to JustAnswer!
The mode door actuator is designed to default to defrost when vacuum to it is lost. Your issue could be that the door is broken or bound up, but it's more likely that you have lost vacuum to the actuator. Lost vacuum could be an issue in the dash or a failed control head, but it's more likely to be a disconnected or damaged vacuum line under the hood. Vacuum comes off the right side of the intake and goes up to the reservoir in the wiper cowl, it splits off and goes through the firewall at the heater hose location.
