i have a 2004 dodge ram 1500 5.7liter, i am getting multiple misfire code and truck is running very rough. i have to give gas when i am idling at a light to keep running. i took to a shop where they have now gone from a tune up (plugs/wires), then they called and said it needed 6 new coil packs. then another call says that the pcm is bad, then another call saying it is wiring harness.......this is getting ridiculously expensive and they have had my truck for 8 days. do you know what else might be causing the problem?
Country: United StatesMake: DodgeModel: RAM 1500 4x2Year: 2004Engine: 5.7 Already Tried: plugs, wires, 6 coil packs, pcm (3 because they keep shorting out, supposedly), wiring harness.
Welcome and thank you for allowing me to assist you! Well if they had done their diagnosis right the first time, then they would have found the problem to be the wiring harness. I have seen this before where the harness rubs through at an area behind the right cylinder head and shorts out the coils. I think they should fix the harness for free since they totally missed it. They can pull the harness up and out enough to where the damaged wiring can be repaired. And then put the harness back and route/secure it so that it does not rub again. Now the harness probably did damage the coils, and they needed to be replaced, but I bet your old PCM is still good.
I hope this information helps, and let me know if you need further assistance with this.

ok, i was growing mad, and i actually know the guy at the shop....but i feel like he is just throwing parts at it. as i stated above, he has replaced the wiring harness already....but, when he drove it, it started running rough again and doesn't idle. anything else?
i'm sorry, let me restate, he is in the process of replacing the pcm now, waiting for part. so, he is saying that the pcm went bad again after he replaced the wiring harness. if that helps clarify. sorry.
Hmm, ok, Is it just the mis fire codes that are showing up and no other circuit codes?
not sure, they closed today at 3, so i wasn't able to talk to him again after i sent the last reply to you. i will reply back on monday morning, they open at 7, so i will reply as soon as i talk to them.
Ok sounds good. The reason I ask if it is just misfire codes and no circuit codes i's because I have been seeing broken valve springs on these engines lately. Just a thought Chris
ok, chris......2 1/2 years ago, i had a broken valve spring and i went chasing the problem like this. that is specifically why i didnt want to chase around again and i took it to a shop. but, i am sitting at 1800.00 right now and truck still isn't running right and they still, at 1:00 on monday. don't have an answer for me. i have stated to him that i wanted it checked for a broken valve spring because i have had the issue in the past and it seemed to be the same issues, running-wise. also, i want to rate your info so that you can be paid, but will we still be able to communicate and reply in regards XXXXX XXXXX problem until it is fixed. i definitely think you are knowledgeable and giving me info i need. you helped make me feel better about the (6) coil packs, which seemed very very unlikely to me. i just would like to continue being able to follow up with you until it does get fixed.
Ok, you can go ahead and rate me, and I will still continue to communicate and work with you on this.
