Has there been incidents of Dodge Ram 1500 trucks loosing the front wheels at the bearing or front axle? Had this happen to my 04 Ram on the turn pike. 51000 miles on it.

HI,Did the hub bearing separate and the wheel fall off with the hub still attached?Or did the wheel shear off the lug studs?Do you have factory wheels on it, or aftermarket wheels larger than originals?
Eric, Wheel fell off with rotor attached. Did not lose lugs.
Hi,Ok, hub assembly separated from the hub bearing, which happens due to bearing failure. There are no recalls, no technical service bulletins in regard to the hub bearing assembly on the 2004 Ram 1500. I have only seen this type of separation a couple of times, and in each case, it was due to hub bearing failure. Once unexpected, and the other time I had told the customer 3 months prior that it was failing and he chose to ignore my recommendation to replace it.Although only 51,000 miles, please remember that it is 8yrs old, which is not uncommon to have a hub bearing fail at that age, but usually you will hear either a roaring, growling or humming noise before catastrophic failure like you experienced. If you have oversized wheels and tires on it, this also will contribute to their failure as the load and angles are changed, which compromise the engineering of the hub bearing.Sorry, I wish I could tell you that this is a well known problem and something that would be covered by Chrysler, but that just isnt the case here. This is not a design defect, just an age and wear issuePlease note, your Deposit doesn't constitute a payment. Eric, In regardes to the tires , they are 20 inch, but came from the factory with them. I under stand the age factor, but I would think that mileage would be more of a factor than age. Also there was no warning other than a clunk right before the steering stared to shake and then it just went south from there. Thanks for the info and your time .
Hi,Ok, the tires are fine as that size is factory - i meant more of the large 35s for mudding or offroading. On a sealed bearing, mileage and age are of equal factor because they cannot be greased and the lubricant does dry up or become less effective over time. If they were greaseable, then mileage as well as maintenance would be a bigger factor in it.It is extremely rare to see this type of catastrophic failure of a hub bearing without prior warning thru the type of sounds I described earlier, but is possible. I checked identifix as well as some other souces and there just any wide spread, or even fair amount of this type of failure to indicate a concern of design defect. This is not to say that is not what happened in your case. As with any product man made and mass produced, there is always the possibility of the bearing being defective. Just that this is not a known issue. It would need to be examined by a mechanical engineer to determine if there was a problem in the manufacture of this specific unit - stress in metal, metal not up to specs for the bearings, etc.I just cant tell you whether this is just an age issue of the failure or whether the bearing had a defect in it.If you have a good engineering college in your area, you may want to contact someone in the mechanical engineering department on inspecting the bearing for defects in the metalPlease note, your Deposit doesn't constitute a payment.
