I want to check for codes on a used car I may purchase. If the obd2 has been recently checked, but the problem not fixed, will the codes still show on my code reader even though the previous user cleared the codes?
Optional Information: Year: 2003 Make: Dodge Engine: 4 cyl. Already Tried: Visiting the dealer later today
Hello and welcome to Just Answer. My name is Denny; now let me see if I can help you with your Dodge question.
If they cleared the codes, the codes will not return until the problem happens again.
Even if they didn't make the repairs the codes will not show up if I plug in my OBD2 reader?

If someone had previously cleared the codes, you will need to drive the vehicle, and put some miles on it. Usually 50-75 miles of combinied city and highway driving will do the trick. This is called a "drive cycle". When the codes are cleared, the on-board computer needs to "reboot" itself, and will re-check all the parts/sensors system-wide. When it sees a problem (or the original problem again) the code will be stored and the Check Engine Light will be lit. Then you can read the codes with your code reader.
