The most efficient, easiest way to replace the alternator is from under the vehicle.


  • Disconnect negative battery cable.
  • Raise and support vehicle.graphic
  • Remove lower plastic splash shield.

  • Remove transmission cooler and reposition cooler out of the way.

  • Remove lower radiator crossmember support and position a jackstand under radiator for support.

  • Loosen adjusting T-bolt, but do not remove.

  • Loosen pivot bolt, but do not remove.

  • Remove the generator drive belt. Refer to the Cooling System section.

  • Disconnect the generator field circuit plug.

  • Remove the B+ terminal nut and wire.

  • Remove pivot bolt, being careful not to lose spacer.

  • Remove generator.
