Hi. This p0700 is letting you know there is a trans fault present.

The p0740 is the real problem. That is a torque converter code. It can be anything from the solenoid pack, valve body, or the front pump and torque converter.

Here is the diagnostic flow chart:

P0740-TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH CONTROL CIRCUIT

When Monitored: During Partial Electronically Modulated Converter Clutch (PEMCC)

operation.

Set Condition: The trans must be in PEMCC, input speed greater than 1750 rpm. The

TCC/L-R solenoid must achieve max duty cycle and NOT be able to pull the engine speed

within 60 rpm of input speed. The code sets after 3 attempts at less than 30 deg of throttle

angle.

POSSIBLE CAUSES

CHECKING SYMPTOMS AND POSSIBLE CAUSES

LOW BATTERY VOLTAGE CAUSING SYMPTOM

CODE P1784 ALSO PRESENT

NO PEMCC TO FEMCC TRANSITION DURING TIP IN

OIL PUMP BUSHING LOW PRESSURE

SOLENOID PACK ASSEMBLY L-R SOLENOID OPEN

VALVE BODY DEFECTIVE VALVE MECHANISM

INTERMITTENT CODE P0740

TEST ACTION APPLICABILITY

271 Check the Global Good Trip Counter.

Is the Global Good Trip Counter 3 or less ?

All

Yes ® Go To 273

No ® Go To 272

272 Write down and record all DTC's and one trip failures.

With the DRB, erase DTC's.

Follow the instructions below, and try to set the code.

Code P0740 - With the Transmission at normal operating temperature, drive in 4th

gear at light Throttle at 50 MPH for 17 to 20 seconds. Verify EMCC by monitoring the

bottom of the DRB RPM display.

Code P0740 continued - When EMCC begins, tip gradually into the Throttle while

EMCC is maintained on the screen. Partial Lockup (PLU) to Lockup (LU) should be

seen after 5-10 seconds. Do this maneuver at least three times.

Did the erased DTC come back ?

All

Yes ® Go To 273

No ® Go To 277

273 Connect a 0 to 300 PSI gauge to the TCC Off Port.

With the DRB read and record Trouble Codes, then erase codes.

Drive vehicle in overdrive until it is fully warmed up.

Drive in 4th Gear Overdrive for a minimum of 10 seconds.

Note: The vehicle speed must be greater than 50 MPH.

Perform the following 2 steps 3 times. Monitor the pressure gauge during the

procedure. Close the throttle, then tip in to between 25-29 degrees and hold for 10

seconds.

Note: If you go over 30 degrees you must close throttle and try again.

Did the DRB show a PEMCC to FEMCC transistion during tip in during any of the

three tries?

All

Yes ® The conditions required to set this code are not present at this

time.

Perform Transaxle 41AE/TE Verification TEST VER-1A

No ® Go To 274

274 Measure the pressure at the TCC Off Port.

During transition of PEMCC to FEMCC during tip in, was the pressure less than 10

PSI during PEMCC?

All

Yes ® Inspect and repair Oil Pump Bushing per service procedures.

Note: Always replace the Torque Converter when a Code P0740 is

present without a Code P1784. Thoroughly clean the Transmission

and Cooler per Service procedures.

Perform Transaxle 41AE/TE Verification TEST VER-1A

No ® Go To 275

275 Was a Code P1784 present prior to erasing codes? All

Yes ® Replace the Solenoid Pack Assembly. (L-R Solenoid failure)

Perform Transaxle 41AE/TE Verification TEST VER-1A

No ® Go To 276

TEST ACTION APPLICABILITY

276 With the Engine still running, come to a stop and shift to neutral.

Does the L-R Pressure Switch State indicate CLOSED ?

All

Yes ® Replace the Valve Body.

Perform Transaxle 41AE/TE Verification TEST VER-1A

No ® Replace the Solenoid Pack assembly. (L-R Solenoid failure)

Perform Transaxle 41AE/TE Verification TEST VER-1A

277 Inspect the following for pushed out terminals or flared connections: - Engine gnd

connections - TCM grounds (pins 53 and 57) - TCM battery feed pin 56 - Power feed

to Trans Ctrl Rly from the EATX fuse in the PDC - TCM Fused Ignition Sw Output

pin 11

Was a defective condition found?

All

Yes ® Repair as necessary.

Perform Transaxle 41AE/TE Verification TEST VER-1A

No ® Go To 278

278 Connect the DRB to the Data Link Connector. Reconnect any disconnected components.

With the DRB, erase all Trouble Codes and set the Global Good Trip Counter

equal to zero.

With the DRB, display Transmission temperature. Start and run the Engine until the

Transmission is HOT (above 110 deg. F) CHECK THE TRANSAXLE FLUID.

ADJUST IF NECESSARY.

Road test the vehicle. With the DRB, monitor the Engine RPM. Make 15 to 20

1-2,2-3,3-4 upshifts. Perform these shifts from a standing start to 45 MPH with a

constant throttle opening of 20 to 25 degrees.

Below 25 MPH, make 5 to 8 wide open throttle kickdowns to 1st gear. Allow at least

5 seconds each in 2nd and 3rd gear between each kickdown.

If the vehicle is equipped with AutoStick, place the shift lever in the AutoStick

position and perform a complete upshift and downshift sequence.

Did the Transaxle function properly during the road test ?

All

Yes ® Test Complete.

No ® Go To 279

279 Note: Low Battery voltage can cause many of the non-DTC Symptoms (denoted by a

preceding asterisk) listed in the Symptoms List.

Check the Battery voltage with a voltmeter.

Is the Battery voltage low ?

All

Yes ® Repair low Battery voltage as necessary and verify that original

symptom exists before proceeding with any non-DTC (Symptoms

preceeded with an asterisk) symptom repairs.

Perform Transaxle 41 TE/AE Verification TEST VER-1A

No ® If Battery voltage is OK, refer to Symptoms List for problems

related to Transmission and select the Non-DTC Symptom (preceeded

with an asterisk) from the Symptoms List that best

describes the existing problem.

Perform Transaxle 41 TE/AE Verification TEST VER-1A
