Hello and thank you for your post. Well my friend the fuel filter is located in the tank regardless of what engine you have it is still located in the tank. Below is some useful information for you.

WARNING: THE FUEL SYSTEM IS UNDER A CONSTANT PRESSURE, EVEN WITH ENGINE OFF BEFORE SERVICING THE FUEL FILTER/FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR, THE FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE MUST BE RELEASED.

Fuel Filter/Fuel Pressure Regulator
Two different types of filter/regulators are used.

  • If a rubber grommet is located between the bottom of filter/regulator and top of fuel pump module (Fig. 23), it can be serviced separately Refer to the following procedure.
  • If this grommet is not used, it cannot be serviced separately The Fuel Pump Module assembly must be replaced. Refer to Fuel Pump Removal/Installation for procedure.

NOTE: The fuel filter/fuel pressure regulator is located at top of fuel pump module on top of fuel tank (Fig. 24).

TIP: Fuel pump module removal is not necessary for filter/regulator removal.

REMOVAL-FUEL FILTER OR FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR

  • Refer to Fuel System Pressure Release in the Fuel Delivery System.
  1. Drain fuel tank and remove tank. Refer to Fuel Tank Removal/Installation.
  2. Clean area around filter/regulator to prevent contaminants from entering pump module.
  3. The fuel filter/regulator is pressed into a rubber grommet. Remove by twisting and pulling straight up (Fig. 25). CAUTION: Do not pull filter/regulator more than three inches from fuel pump module. Damage to coiled fuel tube (line) may result.

  1. Gently cut old fuel tube (line) clamp (Fig. 26) taking care not to damage plastic fuel tube. Remove and discard old fuel tube clamp.
  2. Remove plastic fuel tube from filter/regulator by gently pulling downward. Remove filter/regulator from fuel pump module.

INSTALLATION

  1. Install a new clamp over plastic fuel tube.
  2. Install filter/regulator to fuel tube. Rotate filter/regulator in fuel tube (line) (Fig. 27) until it is pointed towards drivers side of vehicle.
  3. Tighten line clamp to fuel line using special Hose Clamp Pliers number C-4124 or equivalent (Fig. 27). Do not use conventional side cutters to tighten this type of clamp.
  4. Press filter/regulator (by hand) into rubber grommet.
  5. Rotate filter/regulator until pointed towards drivers side of vehicle (Fig. 24).
  6. Install fuel tank. Refer to Fuel Tank Removal/ Installation.
  7. Check for fuel leaks.

FUEL PUMP INLET FILTER REPLACEMENT

NOTE: The fuel pump inlet filter (strainer) is located on the bottom of the fuel pump module (Fig. 30). The fuel pump module is located inside of fuel tank.

REMOVAL

  1. Remove fuel tank. Refer to Fuel Tank Removal/ Installation.
  2. Remove fuel pump module. Refer to Fuel Pump Module Removal/Installation.
  3. Remove filter by carefully prying 2 lock tabs at bottom of module with 2 screwdrivers. Filter is snapped to module.
  4. Clean bottom of pump module. INSTALLATION
  1. Snap new filter to bottom of module.
  2. Install fuel pump module. Refer to Fuel Pump Module Removal/Installation.
  3. Install fuel tank. Refer to Fuel Tank Removal/ Installation.
