2002 Dodge ram 1500: noises..clicking..accelerating..some vibration

Customer Question

have 2002 Dodge ram 1500. hearing noises from under rear of vehicle, typically what you might hear if u-joint gone bad. a non-pattern clicking or snapping noise which definitely increases when accelerating as well as some vibration in drive train when accelerating. checked u-joints, no obvious sign of u-joint problem. checked extension housing from transfer case, have some play (could move shaft up and down about 30-50 thou where drive shaft enters housing. movement appears to inside housing. to be more specific, seems to be a 'pivot action' with shaft pivoting on extension housing bushing and actual movement deeper in housing, possibly at output shaft bearing. after being home for about 30min, housing was warm, not so warm that I couldn't hold my hand on it but definitely warm(could be normal?). should there be any play at this point? common sense tells me 'no' but I am not a technician. if not, could be extension housing bushing or output shaft bearing (or both)

Hi, my name is XXXXX XXXXX is probably your u joints, you cant always tell with the shaft in, remove the shaft and check that none of the joints are hard to rotate the caps, Play in the extension housing is normal, as long as it is not sloppy, I suspect a bad ujoint.Tim
