1999 dodge dakota: solenoid..My neutral park safety switch..connector

Customer Question

I have a 1999 dodge dakota r/t with some codes being thrown i cant figure out. I have a transmission governer solenoid high voltage code, p1763 and a p1762 sometimes. My neutral park safety switch is wired together due to a broke connector. My question is, would the p1899 park/neutral safety switch be throwing the solenoid off mabey?

Hello, yes, the switch is very important as it does send signal to the ECM/TCM for several computer controlled outputs. This would have a direct bearing on codes being generated. You really need to start with repairing or replacing the switch etc, clear codes and go from there. It is important it functions correctly.

so my question is, will the neutral safety switch be the cause of the governer pressure solenoid throwing a code or are they not related? Im going to fix the neutral sefety switch tomarrow and i will get back to u with the status

yes, it does have a relationship with that solenoid. The safety switch send sigs to the TCM and the TCM does control that solenoid. I am going to say yes, If I am wrong, the neutral safety switch is still very important to send the signals to TCM and NOT just to tell it is in neutral.

is this doesent fix the probelem would you look to the solenoid next or is there another possibility, I also thew a code for an oxygen sensor voltage high. p0144 and ive heard they have a controller on these trucks that connect the solenoid in the same circuit as the downstream oxygen sensor running off a capacitor. is this a possibility?

well?

Clearly 1762 can cause direct problems with the govenor solenoid as shown in first chart. 1763 I am unsure. I would have to say if the nuetral switch affects govenor with code 1762 , and 1763 is also govenor code, and... you have a disconnected neutral switch, I am going back to the original answer in that I would replace the switch and go from there, It is quite possible your problems will be solved. I am sending the full diag chart in next post.

1762

SYMPTOM
P-1762 GOV PRESS SEN OFFSET VOLTS TOO LOW OR HIGH

WHEN MONITORED
Continuously with the key on and engine running.

SET CONDITION
A fault condition is identified if the governor pressure is out of range in park or neutral for 1.3 seconds . The code will be set after three consecutive bad tests.

POSSIBLE CAUSES

  • 5-volt supply circuit open
  • Governor pressure sensor ground circuit open
  • GOV press sen wiring harn intermittent defect
  • GOV press sen wiring harn intermittent defect
  • Transmission Pan/Filter debris
  • Park/neutral switch not operating
  • Transmission fluid problem

SYMPTOM
P-1763 GOVERNOR PRESSURE SENSOR VOLTS TOO HIGH

WHEN MONITORED
Continuously with the key on and engine running.

SET CONDITION
The voltage from the Governor Pressure Sensor is above 4.89 volts for 8.5 seconds .

POSSIBLE CAUSES

  • No possible causes remaining
  • 5-volt supply circuit open
  • Governor pressure sensor ground circuit open
  • Governor pressure sensor ground circuit open
  • Governor pressure sensor harness inter def
  • Governor pressure/temperature sensor def
  • Governor press sensor signal ckt shrt to voltage
  • Governor pressure sensor signal circuit open
  • Governor pressure sensor signal circuit open
  • Governor pressure sensor signal ckt short to voltage
  • Trans harness/solenoid def (sig ckt > 5.0 ohms )
  • Transmission harn/sol assy defective (gnd res)
  • Governor pressure/temperature sensor def
  • PCM defective (gov pressure sensor volts too high)
  • Powertrain control module defective
  • Trans harness/solenoid def (gnd ckt > 5.0 ohms )
  • Trans harness/solenoid def (sig ckt > 1.0 volt )
  • Transmission harn/sol assy defective (sig res)
  • Transmission harness/solenoid assy defective (voltage above 1 volt )
