The catalytic converter sounds like it is plugged up. If the converter plugs up the vehicle will loose power it may cause a misfire code, which is why the check engine light flashes. The noise may be the internals of the converter moving due to high back pressure. Try unhooking the exhaust between the y pipe and the exhaust manifold and driving it. If your symptoms are gone, beside the loud noise from not having the exhaust hooked up, then you found your problem.

Reply to autodoc_2000's Post: I don't beleive this is the problem. In park the engine will rev all the way without any problem, miss, or hestation and the engine exhaust is normal. Is there anything in the drive train or transmission that would cause this problem, the u-joints look and feel solid. The massive vibration comes from the front of the vehicle, not the rear

The u joint in the front axle out by the wheels do go bad. You should be able to move the axle on the differential side to see if there is any play, but this will not cause your lose of power or your check engine light to come on.
