Have you tried a different battery in it?

Rechargeable batteries do fail after 20 to 50 or so (depending upon type and circumstances) charge-discharge cycles, often enough.

Try removing the batteries, and leaving the camera on a (dry, non-humid, non-dusty) shelf for overnight. Then put the batteries back in and try the camera again.

How old is the camera? in months or years since you bought it.

Has the camera been dropped or otherwise subjected to mechanical shock(s) in its lifetime?
Has the camera been operated in or subjected to, temperatures below 32 degrees F (freezing point) or above about 100 degrees F ? Has it ever been subjected to a humidity higher than 85 % ?

By "have you tried a different battery in it", I meant a different individual battery or battery pack, rather than a different type of battery. As I said, rechargeable batteries do fail after a certain number of uses. You might need a new battery / battery pack.

I hope so too... as things stand it is the logical first thing to have done.

Let me know what happens when you try it out, please - this case will remain open, left to itself, for a fairly long time.

Thank you Russel I will let you know how things go, fingers crossed it is as simple as that.

Very good. When you try the new battery out, let me know - in the meantime this case can rest as it is.

It seems as if your camera needs repair if it is to work again.

You have not yet specified your camera's age, but if it is less than a year old, you should be able to get the repairs done for free under warranty terms.

http://camerarepair.fujifilm.co.uk/
will allow you to get an estimate of the cost of servicing for your camera. To quote,
If your camera is not within warranty, we will give you an instant repair price and details of our brand new replacement service.

http://www.fujifilm.eu/uk/support/consumer-products/digital-cameras/
also provides options, such as the tracking of the progress of repairs to your camera.

I hope that this additional information helps with your problem as it stands.

Thank you it is over 12 months old but dosen't get abused, I looked after it very well and now it looks like it will have to be replaced or go in for repair. My husband bought it for a birthday present for me... need to decide now thanks anyway X
