Hi,

Did this problem occur suddenly with a card that you were already using?

What is the brand (Nikon, Canon, Sony...etc.) and model number ( DSC___, Powershot ___, Coolpix___...etc) of your camera?

What is the size (capacity in gb) and type (SD or SDHC) of the memory cards that you are trying to use?

Yes, was taking pictures and suddenly the message appeared. It is a Canon Power Shot S3 IS - the card is a 1GB made by Dane-Elec

Two card possibilities here: One, the card has just worn out, SD cards do actually fail . Two, the card has 1 or 2 corrupted files and the file structure is fragmented making it non readable. If the card has just worn out another card should work, but please keep in mind that this model camera is not compatible with the SDHC cards 4gb and up. A card 2gb or less is needed to test the camera. If the card is just blocked by corrupted files then formatting the card (fat) in the computer using a card reader then formatting it in the camera should solve the problem.

There is a chance that the card is not being recognized due to residue or dirt on the camera's card contacts. Remove the card from the camera and clean the card metal contacts with alcohol and leave them lightly wet, then work the card in and out of the slot multiple times. Next use canned compressed air to blow out the slot. Please let me know the result.

Please keep in mind that my diagnosis & solutions provided are directly dependent on the accuracy of your description of the problem. As with any "do it yourself" fixes, success is a "team effort", since I can't see or touch the camera, and relies on the customer's manual dexterity and ability to follow the instructions well.

If, and only if my answer to your question is helpful and you are Satisfied with it, please leave Positive Feedback. Thank you

Ok the cleaning of the contact didn't work but I was using the old card. The new one is just a cheap thing I had around the house. If I plug the camera into the computer can I do the formatting that way?

No, you cannot format it that way. The object of formatting with the computer and a card reader is to get the camera to recognize the card.
