Customer Question

Curious if this looks like vitiligo? If so what can I do about it? It started about three years ago on the backside of my neck and shoulders.

Hello,

No I think that it looks more like tinea versicolor ---

This is a fungal infection that may affect the pigmentation ..

Treatment with Selsun would work or a topical antifungal such as LAMISIL twice a day for 10 days to the afffected area ...

Note that the recovery of more uniform appearing skin will lag behind treating the fungal skin infection ...

I hope that this information is helpful for you

Let me know if you have further questions or concerns

I Will be happy to get back with you

If my answer has been helpful and to your satisfaction then please remember to leave positive feedback

Thank you and Best Regards,

How do you get a fungal infection on neck and back?
Expert:  Anthony Bray MD replied 5 months ago.

The spores of these skin infections are ubiquitous...they are everywhere as dust ...

Our body grows and laughs skin faster than it grows usually ...

The upper neck may be enhanced as set up for fungal growth as it is I'm an area that is often damp with sweat -- at hairline so it may be shaded with your hair down ...

Damp / dark / moist enhances fungal growth ...

As to escaping exposure to spores we are all exposed to such all the time ....

I hope that this information is helpful for you

Let me know when if I may be of further help

Best regards,

If the selsun doesn't work or the anti fungal cream, do I need to go in to see a dermatologist. Or just leave it be? It's nothing serious correct? I had similar spots last summer on my belly, they were just more pink in color. The spots on my neck and shoulders gradually get worse through the summer months.....

Hello again,

Right it is nothing serious..

The treatment may kill the fungus but yet may take the skin a couple of months to look back to normal ...

Yes certainly you may consult a dermatologist at any time ...

The potential benefit would be that combined oral plus topical antifungal treatment may increase effectiveness ...so a prescription for oral Lamisil 250mg/ day might be added ....

The topical treatments that we discussed should do the trick for you though ...

I hope that this is helpful for you

Take Care!
