This answer was rated:

I have black spots on my skin all over my body - upper arms, stomach, side and thighs.

I think it is keratosis pilaris or some sort of inflammation response. I have tried all sorts of medications but the spots don't decrease.

Tried acne medications such as benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, accutane, urea cream, astringents, moisturisers, shower scrub.

Could this me an inflammation response?

Dr.Sasi Attili : Hi. I will do my best to advise. However, please note that this does not substitute an in-person consultation with a doctor.

Dr.Sasi Attili :

Thanks. Are the spots raised or just flat?

Customer:

they are not raised

Customer:

initial diagnosis was acne ....

Customer:

then thought it was keratosis pilaris

Dr.Sasi Attili :

ok. keratosis pilaris are raised spots. Are the spots centered around hairs?

Customer:

not all the spots have hairs

Customer:

but those that have hairs are centered

Customer:

when I said previously they are not raised.. they are not raised like a pimple

Dr.Sasi Attili :

ok. In that case keratosis pilaris is the most probable diagnosis still

Customer:

it does not seem to respond to any medication ..

Customer:

could it be due to any food intolerance ..

Customer:

an inflammation response?

Dr.Sasi Attili :

unfortunately keratosis pilaris is difficult to clear completely and can only be controlled

Customer:

ok

Dr.Sasi Attili :

it is unrelated to food intolerance

Dr.Sasi Attili :

or anything else

Dr.Sasi Attili :

how does it bother you?

Dr.Sasi Attili :

just cosmetically?

Customer:

yes cosmetically

Customer:

as it all over the body

Dr.Sasi Attili :

ok. have you tried retin-A cream?

Customer:

yes

Dr.Sasi Attili :

that along with 10% urea is the best treatment possible to make the keratosis less prominent

since this is a genetic condition, unfortunately a cure is not possible

Dr.Sasi Attili :

but it does tend to get better at some point

Dr.Sasi Attili :

I had it myself during my teenage years, though not as bad as you

Customer:

I have tried Urea too .. it makes my skin really soft .. but the spots remain

Dr.Sasi Attili :

I am in my mid-30s and it is much better now

Dr.Sasi Attili :

yes, creams only make the spots fade, but don't cure it

Dr.Sasi Attili :

as I said, there is no cure possible

Customer:

I was hoping it would decrease over the years but hasn't yet

Customer:

ok.

Dr.Sasi Attili :

It will at some point. Its just a question of time

Customer:

ok

Dr.Sasi Attili :

do you have any further questions?

Customer:

No, thanks.
