I am a pathologist, but have not practiced in this area for several years. A friend who is a dermatologist would like to establish an independent, freestanding laboratory to support Mohs surgery. Will she need a pathologist as lab director, or can she direct her own limited laboratory?

Hi. I will do my best to advise. However, please note that this does not substitute an in-person consultation with a doctor.

A dermatologist trained in MOHs surgery is qualified enough to set up his own service. A pathologist is not technically necessary in the setup. Dermatologists in the US in fact can report on dermatopathology slides without the need for an additional license
