What causes black vertical lines in the finger and toe nails

This answer was rated:

What causes black vertical lines in the finger and toe nails and how can this be treated?
Hi. Do the lines affect all nails or only some? Do you take medications for anything?
Customer: replied 4 years ago.
Vertical lines affect only some fingers (both thumbs and index fingers) and the right big toe.
The right 2nd, 3rd& 4th toes and getting darker and darker.
Not taking any prescribed medications only over the counter vitamins etc
Ok. Vertical lines on the nails can be caused by a number of reasons but mainly drugs. Over the counter vitamin pills containing iron may also cause this. You could stop the vitamin pills and see if the pigmentation improves. However it might take 6 months for you to notice an improvement. However this is completely harmless and you can leave it alone.

Forgot to mention that I get amanicure/pedicure at least once per month and wear nail polish to cover the discolouration
That's fine. You can continue the same. No problem
