Something is up with my new girlfriend's breath. It is not

Customer Question

Something is up with my new girlfriend's breath. It is not offensive like most bad breath, but smells a little like pepperoni. She brushes, flosses, and uses mouthwash regularly, and has excellent oral hygiene otherwise. I think she may be aware, as she even keeps mouthwash in her car. But the smell doesn't bother me. When we kiss (i.e., make out), sometimes her breath causes a sort of burning feeling in my mouth/lungs. It's like chopping an onion: it doesn't smell bad, but it burns your eyes. Can someone please tell me what may be going on? I don't want this to mess up our relationship. Thanks!

My first guess is tonsils/ tonsil stones. Also certain metabolic conditions such as diabetes can cause odd smelling breath.

2 other possibilities are chronic post nasal drip/sinusitis and gastroesophageal reflux disease. Antacids could treat gerd if present.
